Who can have a web site?

Anyone can have a web site!  More and more people are getting their own web site to share information and photos with family and friends, to sell products online or to provide information to the public.

What is the difference between a web page and a web site?

A web page is a single .html file that exists on the Internet (world wide web). A web site is a group of web pages that are linked together and can be navigated with a menu of links.

What is a web site builder?

A web site builder is a program that is installed on a web site. It lets a person create and edit pages by filling in blanks, so no coding knowledge is necessary.  A web site builder can inlclude photo galleries, guestbooks, product catalogues, calendars, classifieds, download sections and many more options. Please see our web site builder add-on page for more information about options for your web site builder.

What can I use my web site for?

You can use your web site for anything you wish. Some examples are:
  • family or personal web sites
  • selling products online
  • brochure-type web sites
  • clubs and organizations
  • showcasing your home, vehicle or pet for sale
  • What is the difference between a web site and a blog?

Blogs were intended for personal daily journals. They are very popular nowadays because they are easy to use. All one has to do is type in a title for their daily journal and some text, and it gets immediately published on their web site. Most blogs are free but contain advertisements and pop-ups from the companies that provide them. Having a Blog for a web site means that you will have to use part of the provider's address for your site, such as www.a-blog-site.com/yourname

A web site offers more flexibility because the owner is in control of the layout, content, features and functionality. Having your own web site with your own domain gives you the web site address you want (www.yourname.com) as well as email addresses for that domain (you@yourname.com).

    What is a domain name?

A domain name is a name that directs people to a certain web site when they type that domain name into the address bar of their web browser (eg. Netscape, Internet Explorer).  Domain names can have different extentions, called "TLD's" such as .com .ca .net .org .name .tv and others.

.com domains were intended to be used for commercial web sites, .org names were intended for organizations, and .ca is a country TLD for Canadian web sites.  Although initially this was a good concept for separating different types of web sites by their TLD's, .com's are often used for personal web sites and .org's are often used for business sites when a .com has already been taken by another person.

Domain names are registered at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) the nonprofit agency that regulates the domain name system, via a domain name registrar such as bazooti.com and need to be renewed every year.

What kind of domain name should I get?

We offer registrations for .com .org .net .biz .info .name .ca and .tv domain names but you can also register many other names such as .cn .ws .fm and the new .mobi TLD among others. If you require any of these names please contact us.

You may register any TLD that you wish but if you would like to register a .ca domain name you need to be a Canadian citizen.

    What is web site hosting?

Only certain computers, called "servers" allow people to view web pages via the internet. Your web pages need to be stored on a server.

Once you have registered a domain name, you tell the registrar which server your web pages are located on and when someone types your domain name into the address bar of their Internet Browser, they are transfered to the server that hosts your web site and are able to view your web pages.

What type of servers will my web site be on?

Your web site will be hosted on a Unix server (Apache version 1.3.37) with MySQL version 4.1.21-standard, PHP version 4.4.3, PERL version 5.8.7
On this type of server, you can run .php and .cgi scripts and programs.

    How do I get started?

Getting your own web site is fun and easy and takes only a few minutes! If you're not sure what your needs are, try a free 14-day trial web site with no obligation.

If you would like your own domain name, start by comparing our hosting plans to see which one is right for you. Once you've selected a plan, you will start a search for a FREE .com .net or .org domain name to see if it's available. We also register .ca .name and .tv domain names which cost a bit more.

If you change your mind, we offer a 15-day money back guarantee on your hosting plan. Since you will remain the owner of the domain name you choose (only ICANN has control over this), the cost of the domain name will be deducted from your refund.

In both cases, you can start adding content, photos and more as soon as your web site is set up! The process takes between 1 and 24hours, depending on the time of day you place your order and whether it is a weekday or weekend.
